Unkind – I

John Dowland (1563 - 1626): Wilt thou, unkind, ayre (pubblicato nel First Booke of Songs or Ayres, 1597, n. 15). Versione per 4 voci e liuto: Deller Consort, dir. Mark Deller; versione per 1 voce e liuto: Alfred Deller e Robert Spencer.

Wilt thou, unkind! thus reave me
Of my heart, of my heart
   and so leave me?
   But yet or e’er I part, o cruel,
   Kiss me, sweet my jewel!

Hope by disdain grows cheerless,
Fear doth love, love doth fear;
   Beauty peerless.

If no delays can move thee,
Life shall die, death shall live
   Still to love thee.

Yet be thou mindful ever!
Heat from fire, fire from heat,
   None can sever.

True love cannot be changèd,
Though delight from desert
   Be estrangèd.

(Mark Deller omette la seconda e la quarta strofe, Alfred Deller la terza e la quarta.)
